An uncle and his niece have been charged with allegedly attempting to leave two packs of cigarettes and two nickel bags of marijuana for an inmate at the Northampton County Jail.

Northampton County Sheriff's Office Investigator Altessie Taylor arrested and charged Courtney Renee Carpenter, 19, and Chad Everett Carpenter, 35, both of Pleasant Hill, with attempting to provide inmates with drugs and tobacco.

The discovery of the Newport cigarettes and pot occurred Wednesday during visiting hours when detention center staff did a sweep of the property after being alerted to suspicious activity.

The contraband was left on the outside of the property, Sheriff Jack Smith said. “Our detention officer was able to notice two individuals trying to smuggle in drugs.”

Major Milton Drew reported the matter to Taylor, who charged the pair with providing drugs to an inmate and providing tobacco to an inmate.

They received $5,000 bonds and have April 7 court dates.

Smith said detention officers were diligent in the matter. “They were paying attention to what they were doing.”
