According to an initial report by Trooper J.A. Murray of the state Highway Patrol, Claudius Mason Jr. was walking in the roadway with traffic shortly before 4:45.
As the tractor-trailer approached, its driver swerved to the left to miss the pedestrian, who jumped to the left in an attempt to avoid the vehicle, but instead went directly in its path.
