The city plans to scrap curbside recycling for the upcoming fiscal year, and instead plans to give employees a 3 percent cost of living adjustment.

City Manager Joseph Scherer announced the change in budget plans following a public hearing this evening on the financial document, in which no one spoke.

“We're trying to schedule a work session for council next week,” Scherer said during the meeting.

He said afterward, “Looking at our limited funding, it was more important to dedicate funding to other activities. We will not be able to do curbside this year. We may next year.”

The city had allocated $255,000 for a curbside recycling program, Scherer said. “We may try to use other collection points in the city.”

Scherer also said he is also proposing to add two new drug officers for the police department in the financial plan.

The budget, as proposed, contains no tax increase. The budget is scheduled for adoption at council's June 17 meeting, which will be at 7 p.m. in the Lloyd Andrews City Meeting Hall. A date for the work session has not been set.

Mayor Emery Doughtie said during the meeting the budget remains on display at city hall as well as the city's website. He encouraged those with concerns about the plan to call their council representatives. “You don't won't to wait until after the budget has been approved to comment.”
