The Garysburg Police Department is sponsoring its first National Night Out event Tuesday evening.

Chief Melvin Garner said the event will be held at the Garysburg Community Center which is the old Garysburg Elementary School across the highway from the town hall on Highway 46 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back,” he said.

Jake Rice and his wife will be the featured DJ/Entertainment, playing all types of music."They live in the community and love playing in community events for the town. We're inviting everyone in the community to come together to socialize and build relationships," the chief said.

The event is free and there will be games and amusements for the children. Bounce N Bounce Party Zone will be present. There will be food, vendors and information to be shared by the police department.

Other law enforcement agencies will be present.

The District 6B District Attorneys Office, Northampton County Department of Social Services, Garysburg Neighborhood Crime Watch and Halifax Community College, along with others, will have booths set up. Atlas ambulance service and the town's fire department will also be present.

The event will be an opportunity for those attending to ask questions and to get help from various agencies represented, Garner said.

The police department will be giving out coloring books to children and other promotional materials. Every child and adult will get the opportunity to tour the Garysburg Library which is located inside of the Garysburg Community Center.

Vendor applications are still available and can be picked up at the Garysburg Town Hall on Monday. The police department is inviting people from neighboring counties to attend as well. "It's not only for people from Garysburg. Crime is everybody's problem," the chief said.
