A cattle truck driver was treated and some of the livestock he was transporting saved following a singe-vehicle wreck on Interstate 95 Saturday night.

The wreck occurred around 8 p.m. just before the 180 exit, Gaston Fire Chief Ed Porter said in a statement.

The tractor-trailer carrying 38 head of cattle had overturned.

Porter said a local farmer helped move the cattle. It was not immediately clear how many head of cattle survived.

The driver was checked out with non-life threatening injuries and treated by Northampton County EMS and taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center.

State and Northampton County Emergency Management coordinated the efforts and the state Highway Patrol is investigating with the Northampton County Sheriff's Office assisting.

No one was immediately available at the state Highway Patrol headquarters in Roanoke Rapids this morning.
