Two of the victims were airlifted to an undisclosed medical facility, while law enforcement continues to search for the third victim, said Captain M.D. DeLoatch Sr.
The shooting occurred around 1:45 at 1500 Bryantown Road, located about 2 to 3 miles outside Rich Square.
The suspect, who used a handgun, remains at large as of this report and was only described as a black male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt or jacket and black jeans.
DeLoatch declined to release the names of the victims, who were outside when the shooting occurred.
Access to any location near the crime scene was blocked. Two state Highway Patrol troopers stationed at least a half-mile or more from the crime scene directed traffic to turn around.
Several patrol cars and other law enforcement vehicles could be seen in the distance. A state Highway Patrol helicopter hovered over wooded areas where the majority of law enforcement gathered and flew over the wooded area near where the two troopers were assigned to prohibit access to the scene.
Halifax County Sheriff's Office and Roanoke Rapids Police Department officers were also at the scene, including a Roanoke Rapids canine.
Deloatch said Murfreesboro police also assisted.
