Black caucus not going away

On behalf of the Halifax County Black Caucus (HCBC) executive board and membership, I want to express our appreciation for the support and participation in the local 2018 Primary Election by voters.

Events commemorating Martin Luther King Day in the Roanoke Valley begin Sunday with a wreath-laying ceremony at Martin Luther King Community Park in Roanoke Rapids.

A Thursday meeting between city officials and black community leaders left both sides with an agreement to continue talks, participants said in statements released today.

The Halifax County Board of Elections this evening will examine protests filed concerning perceived irregularities in the May 6 primary.

Cancelled march becomes prayer walk

What was to be a march that was cancelled late Thursday night became what its organizer called a prayer walk this afternoon.

Roanoke Rapids City Manager Joseph Scherer said in a statement today the city was not responsible for any delays or complications in the permitting process for the Halifax County Black Caucus march request for this Saturday.

Black Caucus march cancelled

Reverend C. E. McCollum, chairman of the Halifax County Black Caucus, said in a statement issued late Thursday evening, the governing board of the HCBC voted not to hold the commemorative march honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. on Saturday.

April 5 march route modified

The route for a march on April 5, to remember the anniversary of the slaying of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. as well as to highlight the current Roanoke Rapids school boundaries, has been modified.
