Hollister native Cheyenna James has been named the new Halifax County public health director and will assume the new role on January 1.

She was hired after Bruce Robistow retired at the end of October.

“I am so excited to have the opportunity to serve Halifax County in the capacity of public health director,” said James. “The knowledge I have obtained since working with the Halifax County Health Department has been invaluable, and I plan to utilize my well-rounded experiences to serve our staff and patients. I look forward to building lasting relationships within the community to meet the needs of its residents.”

A thorough recruitment and interview process was conducted to find Robistow’s replacement, the county said.

James received her master’s degree in Public Health with a concentration in Health Administration from East Carolina University in 2019.

She received her bachelor of science in Public Health Studies with a concentration in Community Health from ECU in 2016. She also attended Vance-Granville Community College and Warren County Early College.

Since January 2022, James has worked for the Halifax County Health Department as a quality assurance specialist II, providing supervision for the Health Education division, including four health education staff.

Serving as a member of the health department’s management team, she helped write and update policies, participated in strategic planning, and reviewed the annual budget with the assistant health director.

From December 2019 through December 2021, James was the public health educator II and lead coordinator for the Triple P Parenting Program, overseeing program implementation, data collection, reporting, budgeting and documentation for the 10 counties supported in the region. In that capacity, she also provided program supervision for two additional program coordinators, attended community outreach events, coordinated training, and led the state diversity, equity, and inclusion work group.

“Her extensive background in community health and emerging regulation will prove invaluable to the resiliency of the department,” said board Chairman Justin D. Blackmon. “Cheyenna will also bring leadership, energy, and creativity to our programs, along with a deep sense of commitment to our community. We very much look forward to working with her and are excited to see the positive impacts she will bring.”

James currently resides in Rocky Mount with her husband Demonté and 8-month-old daughter Zoë.
