Crash victim, child improperly restrained in fatal

A Roanoke Rapids woman who died in a car crash Saturday night was not wearing her seat belt properly, the state Highway Patrol said this morning. The woman’s 1-year-old child was also improperly restrained in her child seat and is in serious condition but expected to be OK, Sergeant E.S. Schaberg said. A 14-year-old passenger in the 1991 Honda was also seriously injured.

Sheriff’s office investigates arson

The Halifax County Sheriff's Office is investigating the arson of a home in the Scotland Neck area of Old Highway 125.

The fire was reported on Sept. 11 at 9:56 p.m. The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting the sheriff's office in the investigation, Major Bruce Temple said in a press release. The house was a total loss and Temple declined to comment on how the fire was started.
