The Halifax County Sheriff's Office is investigating the damage of several mailboxes in the areas of Huckleberry Bottom Road, Reynolds Circle and Edge Water subdivision between Friday and Monday.

Major Bruce Temple said it was obvious that suspects were in a vehicle at the time of offense. Crimestoppers is offering a reward in the cases.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

Police investigate unattended death

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department continues to investigate an unattended death on Monday.

Chief Jeff Hinton said the death occurred in the 600 block of Ashton Street.

He declined to release further details.

City to help Brandy Creek with de-annexation

Mother cited in May 7 fatal

The mother of a 5-month-old girl who died in a May 7 traffic crash has been cited, according to the Highway Patrol.

Sergeant R.E. Dudley said Trooper Scot Richardson cited Marcla Wells of Skippers, Virginia, with driving left of center and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

The crash occurred on Highway 301 about a mile south of Highway 48 in Northampton County.

The adult occupants of the vehicle were Wells and Darryl Martin of Garysburg, the child’s father.

Richardson said the vehicle was traveling on a straightaway when it went left of the center line and struck a telephone pole. Contributing to the wreck were overcorrecting and driving left of center.

Proposed city budget notes challenges

The city Monday released its proposed budget and fee schedules for the upcoming fiscal year along with its manager’s budget message. Council will have a work session at 3 p.m. Thursday in the first floor conference room of city hall.
