Conway native Regina Barrett will have a starring role in the stage production Guns of Ava: The Ken Dula Story.
Barrett portrays Ava Franklinton, a central character in the play based on the real-life experiences of a Vietnam War veteran.
Barrett, a singer, songwriter, dancer, and fashion designer, who is also founder of Nova Threadz LLC, has appeared in films like Blood Done Sign My Name, Finding Me, and Redemption, and in theater productions such as Slapping God in the Face.
(The production is scheduled for a single performance on October 25 at the Hanes Theatre, 1709 High School Road, Chapel Hill. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at eventbrite.com)
Guns of Ava centers on the journey of Kenneth M. Dula, a Vietnam War veteran. The story, written and directed by Brenda L. Womble, a North Carolina Central University professor, explores themes of war, trauma, love, and healing.
Barrett's character navigates a complex relationship with Dula.
She shares the stage with Gregory McGilberry, who plays Brent, who is described as a driving force of the production.
"The cast has been incredible, we have become family," Barrett said.
She is also grateful for the leadership of Womble as director: "Brenda’s vision and dedication have been essential to making this play come alive, and I’ve learned so much working with her and the whole team.”
