An Enfield man charged in a January shooting death in Rocky Mount waived his right to counsel in Nash County District Court Monday, according to court records.
On Saturday, Gregory Jason Harper was stopped by Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Deputy J. Wilson for a brake light equipment violation, Major Anzell Harris said in a statement. The stop occurred in the area of Highway 48 and Medoc Mountain Road.
Wilson identified the driver as Harper, 26, and learned through a license and warrant check that he was wanted by the Rocky Mount Police Department for first-degree murder in the shooting death of Andre West, which occurred on January 17. The RMPD obtained the warrant on February 10.
Court documents show that in Halifax County, Harper was convicted on January 30 of assault on a female and received a 60-day suspended sentence and unsupervised probation. That document was contained in Nash County District Court records that supported the judge’s decision to deny pretrial release. Harper is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on March 12.
Wilson took Harper into custody with assistance from Corporal M. Kalkbrenner. Harper was issued a citation for the brake light violation and served with the RMPD warrant for first-degree murder.
