A Roanoke Rapids interior decorator has been charged with one count of exploiting disabled or elderly trust, according to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

According to a report filed by Detective John Taylor, Tony Linwood Martin Jr., 46, of Jackson Street, was charged last week following an investigation into alleged offenses that occurred from April 4 of last year to February 15.

Neither Taylor nor Captain Andy Jackson would elaborate on the charge lodged against Martin, Jackson saying police didn’t want to do anything that would jeopardize the case and Taylor declining comment based on its ongoing nature.

The case summary signed off by a magistrate last week says the magistrate believes, based on the investigation by Taylor, that Martin allegedly exploited an elderly person more than 60-years-old.

The summary says the magistrate believes the victim was not able to secure the services available to safeguard their rights and resources to maintaining their physical and mental wellbeing.

The magistrate found probable cause that Martin allegedly used his standing in a position of trust, confidence or a business relationship to deceive the victim to obtain $183,000 with the intent to deprive the victim of the money temporarily or permanently to use for his benefit.

The summary does not go into detail of how the money was obtained.

Martin was released on $2,500 secured bond and has a May 2 court date.

District Attorney Melissa Pelfrey could not be reached for immediate comment.
