A man charged in the April 3, 2008 murder of Jerry Yellorday, a case in which no probable cause was found for all those charged, was placed on $1 million bond last week after a shooting at Creekside Court.

Robbie A. Jones faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and three counts of injury to personal property.

Investigator Bobby Martin of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said this afternoon the matter stems from beef between Jones and the people he reportedly shot at on April 1 around 3 p.m.

“I don't know exactly what the beef is about. There was allegedly bad blood between Jones and the people he shot at,” Martin said.

Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement Master Officer Gorton Williams responded to Creekside Court and found no one was injured. Several residences and a vehicle was damaged.

Information received led officers to the Vine Street area where Officer Adam Salmon talked with two people who initially fled on foot.

Hasty said during the investigation a handgun and ammunition was recovered.

Martin arrested Jones, who has an April 15 court date.

“The outstanding investigation by Officers Salmon and Williams made the identification of the shooting suspect possible,” Martin said in a statement.

Martin said the Creekside Court matter is isolated and not related at all to the 2008 murder of Yellorday.

Jones, 34, had been indicted in the Yellorday case but when a superior court judge found no probable cause that October, proceedings in the case halted.

The judge found no probable cause against Charles “Oosie” Hockaday, Damien “Dang-Dang” Mitchell and Trayvon Purnell. The judge, who was from Orange County, did not find one of the witnesses believable.

Yellorday, 29, was shot as he sat in his vehicle outside his residence.

Mitchell and Hockaday are currently serving federal time for drug counts based on investigation by the sheriff's office.

Chief Deputy Bruce Temple of the sheriff's office said this evening of the Yellorday case, “It's never been closed. Since there was no probable cause found there have since been efforts made to further the investigation. Obviously, I cannot divulge specific information.”
