Residents of a house in the 200 block of East Sixth Street escaped safely from a fire Saturday night, according to the Weldon Fire Department.

Deputy Chief Ben Sloan said the fire department was dispatched to the residence around 7 p.m., the call coming in as a heater fire.

Firefighters observed fire coming out of a second story window and additional assistance was requested from Rheasville, Halifax and Roanoke Rapids. Halifax County EMS and Weldon police also responded. Thirty firefighters were on the scene.

Firefighters deployed an attack line through the front and upstairs to quickly extinguish the flames. Sloan said the fire was under control in 20 minutes and firefighters remained at the scene for approximately two hours.

He said the cause of the fire is undetermined but is not considered suspicious at this time. Damage was sustained to four rooms in the house, mostly on the second floor.

There was loss of some possessions, mostly in the bedroom where the fire started, but the house is not a total loss and should be salvageable.

The Red Cross was contacted to assist the residents.

“I am proud of the work done by all of our firefighters from Weldon and our mutual aid departments that night,” Sloan said. “With a quick response from all departments we were able to save most of the house. Working together works.”
