The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Shane Guyant:

On Saturday around 7:30 p.m. Captain J. Baggett stopped a vehicle operated by Tensey Lenel Daniel, 41, of Enfield for displaying a revoked license plate with no insurance.

Baggett smelled a strong odor of alcohol and Daniel’s speech was slurred and mumbled — showing signs of impairment.

Daniel was unable to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and was determined to be too impaired to drive.

Daniel was taken into custody and transported to the police department where he submitted to a chemical analysis of his breath. The chemical analysis revealed a .12 BAC.

Subsequently, Daniel was charged with misdemeanor DWI, no insurance, and no operator's license.

Daniel was released by a magistrate on a written promise to appear in court on March 11.

"We keep charging people with DWI and they keep driving while impaired,” Guyant said. “A DWI costs on average $10,000 to defend in court.  Why would anyone want to drive impaired?  Makes no sense to us.  Evidently, the lesson here is that people will keep driving impaired and we will keep arresting them and posting and reporting to the media about these arrests.  Maybe one day they will learn."

Domestic trespassing

On Friday around 3:30 p.m., Officer C. Walker and PACE Office J. Conrad were dispatched to a call on Powell Street regarding a domestic violence order trespasser.

Both officers were advised that Melvin Ivey, 56, of Roanoke Rapids was wanted by the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections for a probation violation from a 2023 conviction for misdemeanor possession of stolen goods.

Walker found Ivey holding a long-handled ax in his hand and commanded him to drop it. Ivey complied.

Ivey fled when Walker attempted to place him in custody.

Conrad intercepted Ivey in the woods and took him into custody with no further trouble.

Ivey had trespassed at a residence he was forbidden to be at due to a 2023 domestic violence order signed in district court.

Ivey was subsequently charged with resisting a public officer, domestic violence protective order violation, and second-degree trespass.

He received a $5,000 court-ordered cash bond for the probation violation and was jailed without the opportunity for bond for the new charges. He remains in custody and has a March 15 district court date.

Concealed weapon

On Tuesday Conrad was patrolling the area of Julian R. Allsbrook Highway when he observed an Escalade with dark-tinted windows.

Conrad detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

Upon a probable cause search of the vehicle, a loaded Glock 19 firearm was found inside the center console.

The driver, Marcellus Joshua Hawkins, 33, of Roanoke Rapids, does not possess a valid concealed carry permit.

The pistol was seized and Conrad learned Hawkins’ driver’s license was also revoked.

Hawkins was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, windshield tint violation, and driving while license revoked.

He has an April 22 district court date.
