Barbara House “Brucie” McKinney, 68, died Tuesday, February 9, 2021 in her Roanoke Rapids home.

Brucie was born in Nash County on October 23, 1952, the daughter of James Bruce House and Barbara House.  Her father; her husband, Dwight Ross McKinney, Sr; and an infant brother all preceded her in death.

Following her graduation in the first class from Hobgood Academy, Brucie attended Atlantic Christian College, then graduated from Mt. Olive College with her degree in elementary education. She retired from Aurelian Springs Elementary School following a 33-year teaching career.

Brucie loved Duke basketball; she attended Bear Swamp Baptist Church. 

Survivors include her son, Ross McKinney; daughter, Diane Clay (Daniel); grandchildren, Harleigh Clay and Wyatt Clay; her beloved dogs, Daisy and Duke; brothers, Hugh House (Pat), and W.R. House; sisters, Kim Harkins (Randy) and Debra Stewart (Bob).

Friends may visit with the family from 6:00 – 7:30 pm, Monday, February 15, 2021 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

The funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 am, Tuesday, February 16, 2021, with Pastor David Fambrough presiding.  

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Those in attendance are asked to follow masking and social distancing recommendations.

The service will be recorded then later posted for viewing on the Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service Facebook page.
