Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, Martha Frances Herbert Hux, went to be with her heavenly father on Tuesday, March 9, 2021.

Frances was born February 5, 1932, in Enfield, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Henry Louis and Katherine Keaton Herbert.

The youngest of five children, she had the blessing of a farm life, simple homespun days, and wonderful friendships.

A graduate of Enfield high school, she enjoyed participation in sports, drama, and other “people” activities. In 1955, she married Marion Thomas Hux of Darlington, NC, blessing their marriage with three children, Lisa, Denise, and Steve and enjoying her life as a wife, mother, and homemaker.

She spent nearly 40 years pursuing her greatest purpose and passion, teaching, and remained steadfastly dedicated to the love and education of many “pre-school & after-school” children. She championed the classic values of truth, honesty, self-esteem, and respect for your family and your fellow human beings.

Frances’ very essence was a grand mix of spunky spiritedness, care & giving, and genuine, yet gentle directness. She approached everyone in the spirit of friendship, finding the best in each individual and making every encounter memorable.

She knew no strangers and willingly gave of herself and her time for anyone in need. She was a very hard-working, reliable, and selfless woman and enjoyed being part of a team, for work, for schools, or for other community fundraising efforts. She loved people and welcomed the opportunity to be one’s friend.

The family extends a very special “thank you” to all her students, to the parents of her school kids, and to the multitude of "every day" hometown friends and neighbors who greeted and loved her as “Ms. Hux'' or “Granny”. A special thanks is also sent to a number of Eastern North Carolina nurses, doctors, and caregivers for the love and compassion shown during her recent short illness.

Frances is survived by her daughter, Lisa Katherine (John) of Salvo; her son Steven Thomas of Nashville, NC; her granddaughter Stephanie Keaton of Cary; her grandson John Thomas of Garner; her great grandson Ashton Tyler; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Frances was preceded in death by her husband Marion Thomas; her daughter Karen Denise; her brothers Raymond, Marvin, and James; and one sister Vivian.

A private burial will take place with the immediate family at Ebenezer Methodist church in Darlington, NC. At a later time, the family will hold a celebration of life to honor her, and her life well lived.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or to one’s choice of charity or organization promoting healthy childhood development and education.

Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service of Roanoke Rapids is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences and special memories may be shared at www.hockadayfs.com
