Marcus Alton Garriss, III, 53, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

Marcus was born June 21, 1969, in Halifax County to Marcus Alton Garriss, Jr. and Suzanne Ogletree Garriss. He was preceded in death by his father and his aunt, Barbara G. Jones.

Mark graduated from Halifax Academy with the Class of 1987. He went on to continue his education at Louisburg College and ultimately graduated from Halifax Community College with a degree in Medical Lab Technology. He was employed with ECU Health Roanoke Chowan Hospital for over 28 years in the lab and absolutely adored his work family. A proud serviceman, he retired from the North Carolina Army National Guard after 20 years of service and a tour of active duty in Iraq.

Mark was a loyal husband and loving father, son, and brother.  He loved his family more than life itself. When he wasn’t in a duck blind or up a tree stand, you could always find him cheering on the apple-of-his-eye Maecy from the sidelines. He was always incredibly proud of his son Mark.

He was an avid outdoorsman who shared his passion for hunting and fishing with some of his dearest friends and nephews. Many have referred to him as a gentle giant with a kind soul and warm smile. He never met a stranger and cultivated lasting friendships that spanned decades. To know him was to love him.

Marcus is survived by his wife, Michelle Garriss; his mother, Suzanne Garriss; his father-in-law, Carlton Miles; his mother-in-law, Jill Miles all of Roanoke Rapids; his children, Mark Jones and his wife Atalee of Florence, SC and Maecy Garriss of Roanoke Rapids; his sister, Melissa Knight and her husband Brent of Roanoke Rapids and his nephews, Jarret Williamson and Colin Clements.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, February 26, 2023, at Rosemary United Methodist Church with Rev. Keith Sexton officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:30 P.M. Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

Memorials may be made to Halifax Academy Shooting Team, 1400 Three Bridges Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
