If anyone starts complaining that there is nothing to do around here, just tell them to check out the website www.AtTheMic.com, because there are at least 18 musical events happening this weekend.
One of the biggest events will be the show at the Roanoke Rapids Theatre on Saturday night. It’s the Tribute to the Music of Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin presented by Brencore Entertainment.
Robert Smoot is the promoter of this show. With his company Brencore Entertainment, he puts on five to ten shows in the DC area every weekend where the clubs or restaurants with maximum capacity of about 250 sell out.
He has many outstanding performers that he works with on a regular basis. Some are national recording artist in the fields of Jazz and Blues. So when he creates a theme for a show, he has many performers to choose from. He even has his own band, The Brencore All Stars.
Smoot has already produced two shows at the Roanoke Rapids Theatre, The Tribute to the Music of Luther Vandross and The Music of Motown. Both shows were very well produced, and the performances were comparable to a show that could be seen at a well established entertainment venue in Vegas.
But that’s what Smoot does, he producing top quality shows every weekend. For those who have attended one of the previous shows, none were disappointed in the entertainment value they received and I expect this to be another great performance of the music that many of us have enjoyed over the years.
Tickets can be purchased at http://www.rrcitytheatre.com/, The Visitor Center in Premier Landing (Walmart Shopping Center) and the day of the show at the Roanoke Rapids Theatre Box Office.
There’s even a chance to win tickets on the website www.AtTheMic.com. The drawing will be on Thursday June 27th at 5pm.
First For Freedom, Halifax County’s own Historical Outdoor Drama will have their opening night this Thursday marking the 37th season of the 2nd longest consecutive running outdoor drama in North Carolina. This musical drama will be preformed for the next three weekends on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm at the 4H Rural Life Center on Hwy 903 between I-95 Exit 168 and the Town of Halifax.
This outdoor drama explains why there are signs on I-95 proclaiming Halifax County as the “Birthplace of Independence” and why the date of April 12, 1776 is on the North Carolina Flag. Do you know why?
Many would think that the Birthplace of Independence would belong to Philadelphia since it’s where the Declaration of Independence was signed. But actually it’s because of the actions taken by the delegates of the colony of North Carolina. They were the first colony to declare independence from England. Their actions encouraged the other colonies to do the same which lead to the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th. Even if you have seen this drama before, it’s worthy of going again and relishing in the Spirit of Independence that started right here in Halifax County.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.FirstForFreedom.com and The Visitors Center in Premier Landing. Tickets can also be purchased to night of the show at the gate.
This Weekend marks the beginning of the Forth of July week. Weldon has their Independence Celebration on Saturday and will have the Main Event Band for their Live Entertainment along with amusements for the kids and vendors for all. Fireworks at 9pm.
