Ten shots were fired from what is believed to be a high-powered assault rifle during a drive-by shooting in Garysburg this morning.

Assistant Garysburg Police Chief Melvin Garner said no one was injured. Two elderly people, a young granddaughter and young female with her seven-month-old child were inside the residence at 200 Maple Street when the shooting occurred just before 12:15 a.m.

One elderly man was asleep in bed, an elderly female was asleep on the couch with her granddaughter lying on the floor and the young female was in bed watching television with her seven-month-old child when the rifle blasts occurred. “The most important thing is, with the blessings of God, no one was injured,” Garner said. “We're doing everything to find suspects and are still following leads.”

Three rounds hit a Nissan in the yard, while another hit a Camry. Six rounds hit the residence.

While the elderly woman who lives at the house has grandsons who have been arrested before, there have been no acts of violence at the house in the past, Garner said.

After debriefing with Weldon police, Garner said he believes a drive-by that occurred about four hours earlier in Scoco Park is related to the Maple Street drive-by as the vehicle description, a dark colored Honda, and casings match.

Motivation in both cases remains unclear.
