A Mount Olive tractor-trailer driver escaped serious injury, but his rig was destroyed after it burst into flames on Interstate 95 this morning.

Trooper R.P. Dennis of the state Highway Patrol said the crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. in the northbound lane of the interstate just past the 173 exit.

Martin Sherwood, a trucker for Vance Transportation out of Goldsboro, was traveling in the left lane when a vehicle driven by Mark Anthony Richardson of Rocky Mount apparently drifted into the trucker's lane.

The collision caused the tractor-trailer to overturn across on the interstate bridge and slide some 600 feet before it hopped the guardrail into the shoulder of the southbound lane.

Workers clear the roadway of debris.

It is not clear when the rig burst into flames.

As of this report, one southbound lane was open as state Department of Transportation workers organized the lumber that scattered onto the roadway when the truck overturned.

Dennis said he plans to cite Richardson, whose vehicle sustained damage on the left side and was towed from the scene.
