A 17-year-old Weldon youth has been charged with second-degree rape in a case that reportedly occurred at a barbecue June 8 in the Severn area.

Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith said Deputy J.T. Turner II reported to Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids after receiving a report of a sexual assault.

The victim told Turner she was raped during a barbecue.

Further investigation by Lieutenant Bo Deloatch resulted in a warrant being filed for the arrest of Jeremy Lemuel Motley.

Deloatch arrested Motley Friday when he surrendered to the sheriff's office.

He was jailed on $100,000 bond and has a June 23 court date.
