Friday and Saturday begin a 100-mile shopping journey.

From River Falls Park in Weldon to Harnett County, the Highway 301 Endless Yard Sale starts at 7 a.m. and runs through 6 p.m. both days.

The idea for the endless yard sale was born in Johnston County last year and this year extends to areas north and south, said Lori Medlin, president and CEO of the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

(A complete list of Halifax County vendors can be found on the vendor location tab of the yard sale's website. Information is also available on the yard sale's Facebook page.)

“Our job is to market it and help people find their way,” said Medlin, who joins with other tourism directors along the highway for the event.

There should be some 100 vendors in each county selling all items imaginable, she said. “It's going to be typical yard sale stuff, from treasures to clothes.”

Halifax County will be participating in the yard sale in several ways, Medlin said.

There were be 25 vendors set up at River Falls Park in Weldon where tourism will also use the refurbished grist mill there as a satellite visitor's center.

Just down the road on Mill Street, Riverside Mill will have its parking lot full of vendors.

Roanoke Rapids will serve as a spur where vendors will be set up at the old railroad depot at the intersection of Julian R. Allsbrook Highway and Roanoke Avenue. There will also be be vendors along Roanoke Avenue.

Christina Caudle, Roanoke Rapids Main Street development director, said the Smithfield and Selma areas did well through the yard sale last year and hopes that success can be mirrored in Roanoke Rapids. “We thought it would be a great fit. We have some good participants. We're looking forward to seeing what the traffic is like.”

Johnston County vendors and restaurants experienced a “very dramatic impact,” she said.

There will be a myriad of items for sale in Roanoke Rapids, from clothes to estate sale items. “It's really going to be a grab bag. There's going to be some serious shoppers.”

One person from Morehead City called to inform Caudle he was coming with a box truck and a load of money and plans on buying until he runs out of money or the truck is full. “We're getting lots of calls,” she said.

Heading south down Highway 301 there will be vendors at the Department of Social Services; at the town park located in Halifax and at the town hall in Enfield.

From Halifax County, the yard sale goes through Wilson, Johnston and Harnett counties.

For Medlin, it's an effort tourism should back. “Our goal is to bring people in to spend the night. I think it's an economic driver. It will help people discover the area.”
