Levita Webb knows firsthand what the family members of two people murdered in separate shootings in Weldon are going through — her cousin Lynn Clanton was gunned down in Garysburg the morning of July 4.

Webb, 35, is organizing a march Thursday at 4:30 p.m. as a way to show support for those murdered in Weldon Monday night and Tuesday morning and for what she and her family have endured in the wake of her cousin's death.

(The march will start at Three Flags store at Eleventh and Maple streets and go to Weldon Town Hall on Washington Avenue. For more information contact Webb at 252-308-5331)

“It's a small community,” Webb, who lives in Garysburg, said this evening, “Everybody knows everybody. I'm related to them by love. I'm hoping someone comes forward and tells it. It was so senseless. I hope people know that guns and violence is not the answer.”

Webb encourages everyone to attend, even if they are not from Weldon. “I've invited everyone I know. People from anywhere. Mothers and fathers. Kids are scared to sleep in their rooms. This was such a sad, traumatic case. A lot of families are affected. It's changed my thinking that it could have been anybody's child. The violence in our neighborhood has got to stop.”

Webb hopes the march can draw attention to the need for recreation and mentoring programs in Weldon. “There's no where for them to go to learn how to be real men or real women.”

Her cousin's death still troubles her. “I was out there with him. There was no warning. It's all senseless crime.”
