City, NAACP continue diversity discussions

Another meeting between city officials and the Halifax County Chapter of the NAACP last Friday brought up continued discussions of diversity, both sides said in separate statements released throughout the week.

As the city continues reviewing the applications of four finalists for the position of police chief, the Halifax County Branch of the NAACP made a renewed push to name a citizens advisory panel to help with screening in the process.

Aquatic Center to remain open after funding vote

Roanoke Rapids High School swim team coach Patrick Quast fretted there would be no season this year. So did members of his team as city council tried to find money to buy a new dehumidifier for the Aquatic Center.

Voter trust and the Aquatic Center

I find it extremely disturbing that, as of 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening, the closing of the Aquatic Center was a "possibility" and as of Thursday morning, it was a done deal with the announcement made that, as of Monday, October 13, 2014, the doors would be closed.
