The city of Roanoke Rapids is urging residents to take proactive steps to prepare for an approaching winter storm expected to begin within the next 24 hours.

Forecasts indicate the potential for hazardous travel conditions, power outages, and service disruptions. Residents are encouraged to complete necessary errands early, secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices, bring pets indoors, and plan ahead to limit travel once conditions worsen.

“The city is actively monitoring weather conditions and coordinating with county and regional partners. Residents should use this time to review their plans and make necessary preparations before conditions deteriorate,” said City Manager Kelly Traynham.

During severe weather events, emergency response operations may be affected by road conditions and increased demand for service. Advance preparation and limited travel can help reduce risk and support the safety of emergency personnel.

Temporary curfew

In coordination with Halifax County, a temporary curfew will be in effect beginning this evening at 8.

The curfew is intended to support public safety, reduce unnecessary travel, and allow emergency and utility crews to prepare ahead of deteriorating conditions expected with the approaching storm. Residents are asked to plan accordingly and limit non-essential travel during curfew hours. Starting Saturday evening, please stay off roads unless absolutely necessary.

The city will continue to offer essential and emergency services only through Tuesday, January 27. Employees shall contact their supervisor concerning their duty to report.

City offices will be closed for non-essential services on Monday, January 26 and Tuesday, January 27. Additional information on when city offices will reopen will be shared in a future update. Visit  www.roanokerapidsnc.com for opportunities to conduct business with the city online.

Preparation

To prepare for winter weather, North Carolina Emergency Management officials recommend these tips:

Pay close attention to your local forecast and be prepared for what’s expected in your area.

Keep cell phones, mobile devices, and spare batteries charged.

Dress warmly. Wear multiple layers of thin clothing instead of a single layer of thick clothing.

Store an emergency kit in your vehicle. Include scraper, jumper cables, tow chain, sand/salt, blankets, flashlight, first-aid kit, and road map.

Gather emergency supplies for your pet, including leash and care supplies, enough food for several days, and a pet travel carrier.

Do not leave pets outside for long periods of time during freezing weather.

Look out for your friends, neighbors, and the elderly during winter weather.

If your power goes out:

Ensure generators are operated outside and away from open windows or doors to

prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Never burn charcoal indoors or use a gas grill indoors.

Properly vent kerosene heaters.

Use battery-powered sources for light, instead of candles, to reduce the risk of fire.
