A 28-year-old Garysburg man drowned at the Roanoke Rapids lake park off Oakwood Avenue Sunday when he had difficulty after getting in the water.

Captain Andy Jackson of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said Jarmarcus LeChan Ingram went in the water to swim shortly after 6:35 p.m.

He had what Jackson described as some difficulty while in the water and began waving his arms for help.

Roanoke Rapids Police Officer Mike Moseley was the first to arrive and immediately dove in the water and retrieved the victim.

CPR was administered and Ingram was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Jackson said it was unclear whether Ingram knew how to swim.

He said Moseley did all he could do to save the man. “I think he did an excellent job.”
