An inmate who jumped from a moving work crew van this afternoon was swiftly captured and returned to custody following a multi-agency search, according to Captain Ashley Collier of the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael Elijah Haddock had been assigned as a trustee on a work crew earlier this morning, Collier said. At approximately 1:45 p.m., while traveling on  Highway 186 near Cornwallis Road in Garysburg, Haddock jumped from the moving van.

Emergency personnel mobilized immediately, with the first unit arriving on scene at approximately 1:49 p.m. Responding agencies included the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office, Garysburg Police Department, Garysburg Volunteer Fire Department, Gaston Volunteer Fire Department, and Northampton County Emergency Management.

The search ended less than 30 minutes later. Collier reported that at 2:14 p.m., Haddock was apprehended in the 1000 block of Highway 186.

Haddock was originally being held at the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center on behalf of Pitt County for a driving while intoxicated charge. Collier noted that Haddock will now face additional charges in Northampton County stemming from the escape.
