A 17-year-old boy has been charged with felony hit and run in a July 14 pedestrian fatality in Weldon, according to the state Highway Patrol.
Sergeant R.E. Dudley said the charge against Jonathan Wilson of Halifax, which was filed August 16, reflects he did not stop after he allegedly hit 25-year-old Tomekia Richardson on County Road. Instead he allegedly drove four or five miles to his home. He was flagged down by a Halifax County Sheriff's Office deputy.
No bond information or court date was immediately available.
A report by Trooper K.D. Coggins shows no evidence the death of Richardson was intentional.
The Highway Patrol received the report shortly after 5:30 p.m.
Investigation by Coggins shows that Richardson and a friend, Natasha Pitchford, 22, of Roanoke Rapids, were walking in the northbound lane of the highway when they decided to cross to the southbound lane.
Wilson was driving in the northbound lane as the women crossed the road. The report says he swerved the vehicle to the left to miss someone on a bicycle when he struck Richardson and Pitchford.
Pitchford was treated for non-life threatening injuries while Richardson was transported to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville where she later died.
