As soon as he was out a jail for breaking and entering charges, a Roanoke Rapids man and his friend, who remained in jail, were charged again.

On Monday morning Roanoke Rapids police officers responded to the Chaloner Drive area after receiving calls unlocked cars were broken into. As they arrived they saw two men, later identified as James Dean Crigler and Danny Stephen Bryant, abandon their bicycles and flee to a wooded area, according to Captain Andy Jackson.

Officers Lee Mason, Gorton Williams and Jeffrey Davis apprehended the men, who were charged with resist, delay and obstruct and three counts of attempted motor vehicle breaking and entering.

Bryant was jailed on $1,500 bond and Crigler was jailed on $500 bond and was released later that day.

Soon after Crigler made bond, Jackson said officers responded to a shed break-in which had been reported later Monday after the pair were arrested in the attempted car break-ins.

They discovered the door had been kicked opened and a brick thrown through the window of the house. They also discovered $3,400 worth of jewelry had been stolen.

A witness reported seeing the pair by the shed and Sergeant Mike Moseley interviewed Crigler. An attempt by the victim, who also confronted Crigler, failed to produce a confession, Jackson said. After extensive investigation all the jewelry except a diamond necklace was recovered.

Both men were charged again, this time Crigler, 25, of Jefferson Street, and Bryant, 19, of Charlotte Street, with breaking and entering of the shed and another motor vehicle break-in in which a paintball gun was allegedly stolen as well as two counts each of possession of stolen goods. Crigler was given a $1,000 bond and Bryant was to be served warrants in jail. They have September 21 court dates.
