Two are in jail and another sought for several break-ins that occurred Sunday morning in the 300 block of Marshall Street, according to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

A call from a concerned citizen led officers from A Squad to seize more than $1,000 worth of stolen goods and seize a GMC vehicle belonging to the man still sought, Dallas Hollowell, which contained more stolen items, Captain Andy Jackson said.

Hollowell is wanted as a suspect in the case, Jackson said. “We've got the vehicle seized so if he wants it back he'll have to come see us.”

The investigation that led to the arrests of Alex Boyd, 22, and Carroll Beckleman III, 21, began shortly before 3:30 Sunday morning when a concerned citizen called to report a shed break-in in progress.

Officer Jonathan Benthall from his patrol car observed someone hurrying into the house of a friend and upon further investigation located the males fitting the description inside, along with some stolen property, which included an Ipod, coins, a silver ring, speakers and tools. Officers also located cocaine and the older model GMC with the keys in the ignition. A search warrant for the vehicle revealed more property believed to be stolen, Jackson said.

Through the investigation, officers identified four break-ins and are working on a fifth which occurred in the area during the night. It is not clear whether the break-ins have been occurring longer than Sunday, Jackson said.

Jackson said the investigation took the squad most of the morning but said Benthall's observation and the call from the concerned citizen paid off. “Benthall was one of the first officers to arrive and spotted one of the suspects hurrying up to a house. It took them most of the night identifying break-ins and stolen items on the ground. Any time you can get anyone to be responsible and a citizen makes that call, our response time is usually pretty good. You can't wait until they're gone and then call. When you get citizens proactive like that you can get people off the street.”

Both Boyd and Beckleman were jailed on $40,000 bonds and have October 7 court dates.

Boyd, of Whitaker Street, faces four counts of larceny, five counts of possession or concealment of stolen goods, two counts larceny of a motor vehicle, one count burglary, one count possession of drug paraphernalia, one count breaking and entering, one count larceny after breaking and entering and one count of possession of schedule II.

Beckleman, of Cedar Street, faces four counts of larceny, five counts of possession or concealment of stolen goods, two counts larceny of a motor vehicle, two counts of burglary, one count possession of burglary tools and one count of larceny after breaking and entering.
