A 46-year-old Weldon woman is in jail without the opportunity for bond in the Saturday afternoon stabbing murder of 54-year-old Esther Harvey.

Christine “Runt” Davis, of Willow Drive, and Harvey, of the 1000 block of Sycamore Street in Weldon, were visiting a house in the 1000 block of Maple Street.

Lieutenant James Avens of the town's police department said the two women began arguing. That argument led to a physical fight. Harvey was stabbed in the back once with what Avens described as a kitchen knife. Avens said alcohol use may have played in the part in the argument that led to the fight and stabbing.

Police received the call around 3:30 p.m. Avens said the State Bureau of Investigation and Halifax County Sheriff's Office assisted in the investigation of the case.

Chief Mark Macon said Saturday Davis was developed early in the case as a person of interest. She was arrested late Sunday night.

Avens said investigators are still trying to determine what the argument which led to the stabbing was about.
