The Roanoke Rapids Police Department has confirmed two people died in an apparent head-on crash in the southbound lane of Interstate 95 Wednesday.

Captain Andy Jackson said investigators are not releasing the names of the deceased yet.

He said police are still investigating details of the crash, which would include how two cars in the southbound lane near the 171 exit would wreck in a head-on collision. 

Three other people were critically injured in the wreck which occurred late Wednesday afternoon.
