A Roanoke Rapids man faces sexual assault charges after he allegedly confronted someone walking in the early morning hours Wednesday.

Detective R. Somogyi of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said a report was received the victim was walking down the street in an undisclosed area of Roanoke Rapids when she was allegedly approached by Mathy Ray Hardy, 48.

Hardy allegedly assaulted the woman and then pushed her into a vacant residence where he sexually assaulted her.

The victim fled and contacted the sheriff’s office.

Investigation by Somogyi led to charges of second-degree rape and assault on a female.

Sergeant R. Keeton located Hardy this morning. He was jailed on $90,000 bond and has an August 27 court date.
