WRAL reported that a woman whose car had broken down was walking for help on Interstate 95 northbound early this morning when she was hit and killed.
The TV station quoted state Highway Patrol troopers as saying Symanthia McWilliams Pierce, 43, of Roanoke Rapids, had recently left work and was headed north near mile marker 71 when she encountered car trouble. She crossed the highway and was walking on the exit ramp from southbound I-95 when a pickup truck struck her.
There was no answer at the Highway Patrol station in Roanoke Rapids this morning.
WRAL reported he exit ramp to Highway 125 was closed for about an hour at 1 a.m.
Troopers do not expect to file charges against the driver of the truck.
