Brian Garland Lancaster, wanted in last week’s robbery of Southern Bank in Roanoke Rapids, was arrested this morning in Asheville.

Major Tommy Hathaway of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said Lancaster, 46, was being held on a fugitive warrant and will be brought back to Halifax County within the week to face a charge of robbery with a dangerous weapon. He also faces a charged of attempted robbery from the Fremont Police Department in Wayne County.

Hathaway said investigators received a tip Lancaster was in Asheville. Asheville police located him around 2:30 this morning.

Lancaster had an outstanding warrant from Roanoke, Virginia, but Hathaway said he did not immediately know what that warrant was for.

Lancaster had ties to Wayne County and Fremont Police Chief Paul Moats said Tuesday there were ulterior motives behind the Roanoke Rapids robbery and the Fremont attempt.

“It was a very coordinated effort between multiple agencies,” Hathaway said of the work involved in identifying Lancaster and taking him into custody. “We worked hand in hand to keep a dangerous person out of our community, their community and any other community he might affect.”
