While treated roads are thawing, secondary roads remain treacherous, Major Tommy Hathaway of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said this afternoon.

There remain impassable roads in the city.

Hathaway said people should continue to stay home unless it is absolutely necessary, keeping their speed to 20 miles per hour or less if going out on an emergency.

The police department’s night shift reported no wrecks while the day shift has responded to at least three today, Hathaway said.

“Where the roads were salted and sanded it’s becoming slushy. Where it is not salted and sanded it is still treacherous.”

Hathaway also emphasized four-wheelers and dirt bikes are not allowed on city streets or the Canal Trail.

There was no immediate answer at the state Highway Patrol office this afternoon.

Dominion Power reported 100 to 250 outages in the area.
