A wreck on Interstate 95 Sunday night shut down the left lane of the southbound lane for an hour and a half as Gaston Fire and Rescue personnel worked to extricate the driver from the vehicle.
The wreck occurred on the Roanoke River Bridge around 7:30 p.m. and the call came in that the driver struck a tractor-trailer, according to Lieutenant Edward Porter III of Gaston Fire and Rescue.
Paramedics treated the driver as firefighters took off the roof and driver side door of the vehicle. Roanoke Rapids firefighters assisted in the extrication effort.
A helicopter landed on the interstate to take to the patient to Vidant in Greenville. The head and extremities injuries did not appear to be life threatening, Porter said.
