An Enfield child left for Vidant Medical Center in Greenville in stable condition after he was struck by a pickup earlier this evening, according to the state Highway Patrol.

An initial report by Trooper J. Daniels indicates that 7-year-old Thomas Wells was walking with his family around 7 p.m. on Highway 561 near Justice Branch Road.

The child inexplicably either darted or walked into the travel lane and into the path of an oncoming pickup and was hit.

The initial report indicates the driver did not have time to react. The driver stopped and remained at the scene. Charges are not expected to be filed.

It is believed the child may have been pushing a bicycle rather than riding it because the bicycle was not damaged.
