Halifax County commissioners are expected to develop a matrix system to help guide them in appointing a sheriff to fill the unexpired term of Jeff Frazier.
“I’m confident we will agree the process will be fair and equitable and that the process will be conducted by the same standards,” Chair James Pierce said at this evening’s board meeting.
Pierce said he is developing a hiring matrix that he wants the county attorney to review when completed.
Commissioners, by law, have until July 2 to make a decision but board member Rives Manning he wants it done in June since Frazier has announced June 30 is his last day.
Commissioner Vernon Bryant noted that the county Democratic Party convention will be held Saturday.
Pierce replied, “We’re not required to have input from anyone.”
The chairman also said he was pleased with the ones who have requested to be considered for the appointment. “I’m proud to say we’ve got some pretty good candidates.”
Frazier has recommended his chief deputy, Wes Tripp, for the appointment. Former investigator Tyree Davis, Northampton County school resource officer Chuck Hasty, current Weldon Police Chief Mark Macon and former Chief Deputy James Warren have also requested to be considered for the appointment.
