A new county sheriff will most likely be appointed during the Halifax commissioners’ July 1 meeting.
County Manager Tony Brown said this week the applications of the five potential appointees were received by the May 15 deadline. There were no new applicants.
Brown said commissioners at their June meeting are expected to discuss setting dates to interview the five applicants in a closed setting.
Sheriff Jeff Frazier has announced he will retire at the end of June.
Interpretation of state statute, County Attorney Glynn Rollins said this morning, indicates county boards cannot appoint a successor to the office while the current sheriff continues to serve.
Current Chief Deputy Wes Tripp, Weldon Police Chief Mark Macon, Northampton County School Resource Officer Chuck Hasty, former Chief Deputy James Warren and former investigator Tyree Davis have all applied for the appointment.
