Roanoke Rapids police are looking for answers following a Wednesday afternoon shooting that left a Garysburg man dead and a 20-year -old in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital.

Wilton Lee Shawn Cotton, of 161 Pine Lane, which is outside the Garysburg town limits off Highway 186, was shot multiple times as he sat in a car on Gordon Drive, Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Andy Jackson said.

He died of gunshot wounds to the head. A passenger in the car, which was parked where Gordon Drive dead ends, was also shot. Jackson declined to immediately name the passenger, who had gunshot wounds to his back.

Jackson declined to say what type of weapon was used in the shootings.

He also declined to talk about the circumstances that may have led to the shooting, which occurred shortly before 3:45 p.m.

Police are looking for witnesses who may observed anything. “There were school busses driving by and people out in the residential neighborhood. It was broad daylight, people were out.”
