A Roanoke Rapids man reportedly coming out of the Ransome Circle area of Scoco Park in Weldon was stopped for driving violations, which led to drug charges, this afternoon.

Lieutenant Harold Phillips of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said Agent D.C. Dickens observed William Eugene Edwards, 37, leaving the neighborhood around 12:30 and knew his license was revoked. Dickens stopped him and learned there was no insurance on the vehicle.

Dickens observed pieces of steel wool scouring pads in the floorboard. The pads are used as filters for smoking crack.

Edwards is reportedly a known drug user, Phillips said. Dickens found a glass smoking pipe and .20 grams of crack in the vehicle.

Dickens charged Edwards with felony possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license revoked and failure to maintain insurance on a vehicle.

He was jailed on $4,000 secured bond and assigned a January 7 court date.
