Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Chuck Hasty reported officers made 20 arrests beginning New Year's Eve through New Year's Day.

The matters included a fight and shots fired call at a recently opened bar as well as the following:

• On Wednesday around 3:45 p.m. Officer Patrick Smith responded to a report of a motorist pointing a gun at another motorist near the intersection of Highway 158 and Highway 125.

The victim gave a description of a suspect and the vehicle to Smith who relayed it to other officers.

Lieutenant Jeff Baggett spotted a vehicle matching the description and made contact with the driver, Thomas E. Francis, 63, of Roanoke Rapids.

During the investigation a handgun was reportedly seized from Francis's vehicle.

Baggett charged Francis with assault by pointing a gun and driving while impaired, he was released and given a February 13 court date.

Hasty described the matter as one reportedly fueled by alcohol use and road rage.

• On Wednesday around 11 p.m. officers responded to the area of Riverview Court for an assault. Master Officer Gorton Williams and Adam Salmon responded to the area to investigate the matter. After speaking with the victim of the assault, Salmon arrested and charged Jamel R. Darden, 24, and Freddie L. Mayo Jr., 22, of Garysburg with assault.

Darden and Mayo were given $500 bonds and January 23 court dates.

The victim was transported by EMS to Halifax Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries and released.

The breakdown of calls was as follows:

• A homicide arrest warrant served on Clintonio Bowser in the Derrick Arp murder.

• One aggravated assault.

• Three larcenies.

• Two simple assaults.

• One stolen property.

• One DWI.

• Two alcohol violations.

• One disorderly conduct.

• Two fighting and affray.

• Two contempt of court, perjury or court violations.

• One resisting arrest.

• One trespassing.

• Two other traffic or other offenses.

The police department responded to 161 calls:

• Three 911 hangup-open line calls.

• Eleven alarm calls.

•Three animal calls.

• One armed person call.

• Four assault calls.

• Seventeen assistance calls.

• Forty-one traffic-related calls.

• Eight assault-threats calls.

• Five wrecks.

• Eleven suspicious people, vehicles or activity calls.

• Two trespassers.

• Five larcenies.

• One breaking and entering.

• Thirteen domestic dispute calls.

• Eight shots fired or other noise calls.

• Sixteen serving papers calls.
