A traffic stop for speeding this morning led to charges for a Roanoke Rapids man on marijuana counts.
Lieutenant Harold Phillips of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said around 11 a.m. Agents D.C.Dickens and D.R. Radford stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 1300 block of Roanoke Avenue.
Approaching the vehicle, Phillips said the agents allegedly smelled the strong odor of alcohol and marijuana. The two occupants were searched for weapons. During a probable cause search of the vehicle, 144 grams of marijuana and digital scale were seized.
The passenger of the vehicle, Aaron Elajuwan Ashe, 25, reportedly claimed the marijuana and scales as his and was charged with felony possession of marijuana; possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Ashe was on out on bond for similar offenses and is scheduled to appear in court January 21 on those charges.
He was jailed on $20,000 secured bond and given a February 25 court date.
The driver of the vehicle was issued a warning for the reported traffic offense, Phillips said.
