A total of 28 vehicle break-ins were reported over the weekend in Roanoke Rapids.

Thieves targeted mainly unlocked vehicles, taking clothes, DVDs, change and electronics, police Chief Chuck Hasty said today.

They occurred throughout the city, from East Tenth Street and Walmart, to Harris Street and Cedar Street as well as Rapids, Miles and Wilson streets along with other areas.

The police department also reported four people had their sheds or houses broken into.

The police department is encouraging the public to lock their doors and take valuables in or conceal them in trunks, Hasty said. “We think there's several different groups. We're looking at strategies to control this.”
