A Roanoke Rapids man faces a count of indecent liberties with a minor following a reported sexual assault that was reported Monday morning.

Robert Michael Archer, 58, was jailed on $5,000 bond and given a March 18 court date.

The arrest began with an initial investigation by Roanoke Rapids Police Officer Chris Biggerstaff who then turned the matter over to Investigator Bobby Martin.

Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement Biggerstaff learned that the victim had spent the night at a friend’s house when the assault took place.

During Martin’s investigation it was learned Archer had inappropriate contact with the victim.

Martin said this afternoon the victim was a 13-year-old child and credited the actions of the victim for helping police make an immediate arrest in the case, which was reported around 9 a.m. “The child was awake and alert. The child knew what was right and wrong and was able to notify their parents as to what occurred. Once that happened I started my investigation.”
