The last person wanted in the June 21 murder of Jarshamel Cambridge was taken into custody today after Rocky Mount police found him zipped up in a suitcase.

Matthew Simms is now in custody at the Halifax County Detention Center, jailed without the opportunity for bond.

He will have a first court appearance Friday where he will be advised of his rights. His next court date in the matter is scheduled for December 16, Sheriff Wes Tripp said in a statement.

Simms, a 23-year-old from Hollister, was believed to be shuttling between the Hollister, Rocky Mount and Enfield areas since the murder, Tripp said this evening.

With assistance from Rocky Mount police, Simms was found hiding in what the sheriff described as a small suitcase.

A search warrant was served at the apartment where he was holed up and a handgun was found and seized.

He was arrested without trouble. Rocky Mount police chose not to arrest those at the apartment where Simms was located.

In the statement, Tripp said, “I would like to acknowledge all who gave information pertaining to the arrests of the individuals involved. The investigators worked diligently in bringing this case to a close. We will continue to work for Jarshamel Jaleek Cambridge's family as the case moves forward to court.”

The sheriff's office has described the murder of the 21-year-old Cambridge as gang-related and Cambridge as a victim of circumstance.
