The Halifax Resolves Chapter of the North Carolina Sons of the American Revolution will host the 240th anniversary of the adoption of the Halifax Resolves ceremony on April 9 in Halifax.
The ceremony will be held at the site of the Colonial Courthouse on Market Street at 10:30 a.m.
The keynote speaker will be Compatriot David Gammon, Halifax Resolves Chapter member and noted North Carolina genealogy author.
The address of the Historic Halifax State Historic Site is 25 St. David Street in Halifax.
Public works honored
The Roanoke Rapids Public Works Department recently received the Sons of the American Revolution Flag Certificate for correctly flying the United States flag for patriotic reasons.
John Motley, supervisor of building maintenance accepted the certificate on behalf of the department. Halifax Resolves Chapter Vice R.J. Myrick presented the certificate.
Brochure contest
Riley Mills, an eighth-grade student at Chaloner Middle School, recently won the Sergeant Moses Adams Middle School Brochure contest sponsored by the Sons of the American Revolution. Participating students selected one of the nation’s founding documents and created a trifold brochure explaining it.
Mills was presented with a certificate and a check for $100.
His social studies teacher, Peggy Jo Braswell, was awarded a certificate of appreciation for her support of the contest and a check for $50.
James Rook, another social studies teacher, received a certificate of appreciation for his support.
There were two honorable mentions from the eighth-grade — Courtney Rogerson and Ajah Hill.
The presentations were made by Halifax Resolves Chapter President Ken Wilson.
Mills’ brochure will now advance to the state level of competition.
Judging for this will be held on May 14 at the SAR Patriot’s Day Ceremony at the Alamance Battleground.
Poster winner
Madelyn Wommack, a fifth-grade student at Halifax Academy, was the winner of the Halifax Resolves SAR chapter’s annual Americanism Poster contest.
The topic this year was the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge.
For her efforts, Madelyn received a chapter level winners certificate and a check for $100.
Her poster will now advance to the state level competition that will be conducted at Alamance Battleground.
Madelyn’s teacher, Lindy Rogerson, received a certificate of appreciation and a check for $50.
Wilson made the presentations.
